In this world in which many of us live in fear, whether that fear be for the fate of American democracy, growing war and the strong possiblity of the draft being reinstated, or the loss of our neighbors and friends or maybe even ourselves to illegal and immoral deportation, we must find ways to live for the long haul and keep joy in our hearts.
I was at a presentation last night in which a panel shared lessons from the recent experiences in Minneapolis. I was impressed and inspired by the speakers and at the same time felt a little lost in my own being. I’ve been an activist, organizer, and educator for my entire adult life, some thirty plus years now. I’ve spoken to legislators, taught and led others in doing the same. I’ve walked picket lines, faced police lines, been threatened, and helped coordinate state-wide and national conferences and events bringing attention to issues of concern over the years. Yet, I found myself both admiring the actions of the people of the Twin Cities and asking myself “Could I do it? What is my role today?”
We each hold a role, sometimes many roles. Some of us will stand peaceful and strong, facing ICE and forcing them to back out of our communities. Some of us will provide housing and food to those who need it. Others will tell the stories, making sure that the world is aware of what is happening. Some will help to find the resources to make the work possible. In this moment it seems my role is largely to write the stories that, with some luck, provide others with some hope and something to think about. My role is also to care for the next generations assuring that children are well loved and can find their own paths. I continue to wonder what my next adventure might
This week’s post is simple. All I can say is care for yourself and find your space in this people’s movement. We will all be needed to save this place and community in our land to be proud of again.
